Place Visited The place visited was JAMPUR. This comprises an area of about 10 square kilometer and the population is around 0.12 million. Most of the people of this area are associated to the agriculture directly or indirectly. The old city is about 15-20 feet higher than the new one as the Indus River was too close to it previously, so just for the safety purpose people constructed the town at this height. But later on the river changed the way and people constructed on the lower portion of the land as well. History of this city is more than 2300 years old.
Location This small city is located in the south of Dera Ghazi Khan in Rajanpur District in South Punjab. This city is quite close to the Junction of Indus River and River Chanab.
Flood Disasters This area is from one of the most affected areas of Pakistan. Although the causalities were not reported but the other losses were too huge. Flood hit this city after passing through Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa and rest of the Punjab province. The intensity can be imagined by the location of this city as this is situated on the junction of all the major rivers of Pakistan. Level of flood water was varying from 4 feet to 15 feet in this area. Old city was lee affected but the new one was badly affected by the flood water. Construction of houses here is a mix construction i.e. some are concrete constructed but other as mud constructed. So concrete constructed houses survived by the floss water however some has huge cracks in walls but the mud constructed were smashed by the flood water and people are still living in the camps provided by the Govt. and Non Govt. Organizations.
Reasons for the Selection of this area This area is almost on the end of Punjab Province so in the efforts of restoration this is badly neglected. In the nearer areas almost all the organizations did a lot but these areas are ignored in the efforts of restoration. On the other hand the people in this area are not well enough to reconstruct their houses due to the lake of resources that’s why some of them are still living in camps. These are the main reasons for selecting this area so that we may help some of them to improve their living and to study what can be done for them in future as well.
Observations made in JAMPUR When this area was visited by the team earlier the following observations were made: 1. Some of the people are living in camps even after about 8-9 month of flood disasters. 2. Some people have rebuilt the boundary walls but they are unable to reconstruct the rooms and living in camps inside the walls. 3. Some of them have reconstructed the rooms but unable to complete the boundary walls. 4. Round wall for the room is constructed but roof is not there due to the lake of financial resources. 5. Due to the flood water, people especially children are suffering from some diseases and unable to completely recover due to the lake of money that is required to buy the medicines for them. So, they require some financial aid or construction material to rebuild their houses and recover their health.
About 1200 years ago, a tribe named "Maank tribe" was living in a town named "Baaso" of Moza khanwah. This town was fully drowned in the Indus river which was about 3km in the east of it. And after that this town rise again at location named "Jampur". About 850 years ago, two brothers named "Jadam and Paandhi came in town "Baaso" while they were grazing along with other people of their tribe "Jakharr". Under some agreement of exchange they bought the town on the cost of animals. And then this towned named after "Jadam". Later on it became famous by name "Jampur". The two brothers are buried in the old cemetry of Jampur which is the largest cemetry i'v ever seen in my life. The renowned personalities of Jampur are "Molaana Ubaidullah sindhi", "Sir Zulfiqar Ahmdani (Atomic Scientist)", "Dr. Muhammad Abdullah (Scientist (Chemistry))", "M. Ismael Ahmdani (Writer, poet (Presidential awarded))".
